OsteoMarine

[Questions & Answers]

Q. I’ve always known calcium is good for the bones so do I really need the other nutrients?

A. Most people think calcium is the only nutrient required to keep healthy bones but this is a misconception as other vitamins and minerals are also essential for this. Absorption and utilisation of calcium is tricky and depends on other factors. That is why we have added other nutrients to the formula. Magnesium supports the strength and remodelling of bones. Omega-3 fish oils have been shown to enhance calcium absorption in the gut and also prevent loss in the urine. Vitamin D is recommended to help with the absorption of calcium from the digestive tract. Research shows that taking vitamin D together with vitamin K, which is needed for the mineralization of the bone, is even more effective.

Q. I have been diagnosed with osteoporosis, can OsteoMarine help?

A. Osteoporosis means “porous bone” and this happens after bones lose density because of lack of minerals in the bone. Taking a supplement product like OsteoMarine can be useful but the cause of the problem is more complex than simply not getting enough calcium or other nutrients. Diet and lifestyle factors need to be taken into consideration. A combination of the three is the best mode of action. However, once osteoporosis develops, nutrient requirements become higher therefore you might need to increase the dose as recommended by most health professionals.

Q. What are good food sources of calcium and other nutrients for bones?

A. OsteoMarine provides a dose of calcium to top up the intake from our diet. In addition to supplementation, diet is an essential part of maintaining healthy bones. The best sources of bone building ingredients are seeds and nuts, cereals, green leafy vegetables, oily fish and dairy products.

Q. I know fish oil is important for a healthy heart, why is fish oil also important for bones?

A. The long chain of unsaturated fatty acids contained in fish oils, not only enhance the absorption of calcium in the gut, but they also prevent the loss of this bone building mineral in the urine. Additionally, omega-3 fatty acids inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory hormone like substances called prostaglandins which play a role in the process of bone density loss. On the other hand, the anti-inflammatory effect of PGE-2 prostaglandins, also metabolised from omega-3 fatty acids have been reported to help with joint mobility.

Q. I have heard that magnesium and calcium should not be together in the same product. Why do you have them both in OsteoMarine?

A. Magnesium aids calcium utilisation. While magnesium and calcium may compete with each other for intestinal absorption, this tends to happen when taking an excess intake of one over the other. For this reason, combined calcium / magnesium supplements should contain approximately a 2:1 calcium/magnesium ratio for better effectiveness which is the case with OsteoMarine.

Q. Apart from getting support for my bones, what other benefits do I get from taking OsteoMarine?

A. Nutritional supplements are designed to support health in general. Apart from helping bones, OsteoMarine contains fish oils which have been shown to support cardiovascular health and the nervous system. Magnesium is also important for the heart, muscles and nerves.
