GlucoSelene
[Questions & Answers]
What is glucosamine sulphate and how does this nutritional substance help with joint mobility?
Glucosamine is a substance naturally produced by the body, which is required for the integrity of many tissues, including cartilage. However, the body's production of glucosamine may decline with advancing age.
Glucosamine is an essential component of the building blocks for healthy cartilage, known as proteoglycans, glycoproteins and glycosaminoglycans (GAG's). These also form part of tendons, ligaments, synovial fluid, skin, bone, nails and mucus secretions of the digestive, respiratory and urinary tracts.
The combination of glucosamine with sulphate seems to be advantageous, as there is a possibility that the sulphate portion may exert a beneficial effect on joint health in its own right.
What is the source of glucosamine sulphate?
Glucosamine is usually sourced from the shells of shell fish, such as crab, prawn and shrimp. This material is then very highly refined to purify it. Synthetic sources of glucosamine are also available.
The material used in Wassen GlucoSelene is sourced from the shells of shell fish.
Can I take a fish oil food supplement at the same time as GlucoSelene?

What is the best dose for glucosamine sulphate?
In clinical trials the dose of glucosamine is usually between 1200 - 1500 milligrams per day. This would represent a therapeutic dose.
For general health maintenance it should not be necessary to take such a high dosage. It would be acceptable to start with a higher dose and then to reduce as necessary after 2-3 months. For the GlucoSelene this would be 2-3 tablets as a starting dose and then to reduce down to 1-2 tablets per day.
I have read that it is better to combine glucosamine with chondroitin, is this true?
Whilst we do not doubt that chondroitin has a valuable part to play in combination with glucosamine sulphate, we have decided to combine the latter with antioxidant nutrients. This combination in our experience is highly likely to be beneficial. The major clinical trials on glucosamine sulphate were carried out just using this one ingredient with a favourable outcome, so we did not feel that the inclusion of chondroitin was necessary.
Why take glucosamine sulphate with antioxidants?
Wassen International was the original company to formulate and introduce Selenium-ACE in the UK. We have numerous testimonials on file from many of our satisfied customers, who report an improvement with their joint mobility upon taking our Selenium-ACE tablets. It is for this reason that we have decided to combine glucosamine sulphate with antioxidant nutrients in our GlucoSelene product.
How long do I have to take GlucoSelene before I can expect to notice a benefit?
There is no clear cut answer to this, however, 2-3 months would be a reasonable time to try a food supplement. It is of course also important that the daily dose taken is correct for the individual and an awareness that the outcome is also dependent on the type and degree of joint problems experienced.
Can I expect to notice any side-effects with GlucoSelene?
Sensitive individuals may experience gastro-intestinal irritation. We therefore recommend that this product is taken with food.
Those with allergies should always carefully check the suitability of food supplements with their doctor or pharmacist, prior to taking any new food ingredients.
Can I take GlucoSelene if I am planning pregnancy, if I am pregnant or breast-feeding?
Whilst all ingredients found in GlucoSelene are deemed safe for food supplements, which are classed as a food, we always recommend that those planning pregnancy, who are pregnant or breast-feeding consult their doctor prior to taking any food supplements. There are a number of multivitamin and mineral products on the market that have been designed specially for this time of life, however, we are not able to offer such a product at present.
Although glucosamine is naturally produced in the body, to our knowledge glucosamine sulphate has not been specially tested during pregnancy.
Is GlucoSelene suitable for vegetarians?
Technically, no, as glucosamine is sourced from the shell of shell fish. To our knowledge no flesh is used in the product.
Is GlucoSelene gluten-free?
