Main constituents and their nutritional roles
MAGNESIUM
Magnesium is required for calcium metabolism and therefore plays a part in maintaining healthy bones. This mineral is also essential for the transport of glucose and important in the release of insulin, which helps to control blood sugar levels. Hormone receptors require magnesium for proper function.
The modern UK diet is low in magnesium, as repeatedly indicated by the Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Foods’ annual ‘National Food Survey’, which shows that the ‘Reference Nutrient Intake’ for magnesium is not achieved through the diet.
VITAMIN B6
Vitamin B6 is required for protein and tissue synthesis in the body. Enzymes that regulate hormones are composed of protein, as are particular binding proteins that transport and control bio-availability of steroid hormones, which may partly explain the importance of safeguarding vitamin B6 levels in the body for proper hormonal function.
Low vitamin B6 levels may be associated with a relative deficiency of dopamine, which may lead to feelings of anxiety and irritability. Vitamin B6 is also a co-factor in the production of essential fatty acids and series 1 prostaglandins, and is also known to help absorption of magnesium in women’s diets.
Essential fat metabolism
Magnesium and vitamin B6 amongst other nutrients, are helpful in the conversion of essential fats to hormone-like substances (prostaglandins). Breast discomfort has been linked to a lack of these hormone-like substances.
Brain chemicals
Vitamin B6 and magnesium play a role in the production of brain chemicals. An imbalance of these chemicals can lead to mood swings.
BORON
Boron has been shown to decrease the excretion of calcium from the body and is required for the activation of vitamin D and certain hormones, including oestrogen.
B-VITAMINS
Confiance contains a range of B-vitamins required for energy production and the maintenance of a healthy nervous system.
VITAMIN B5
Pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) helps support the adrenal glands, which become the major source of post-menopausal oestrogen.
VITAMIN E
Vitamin E has been found to be beneficial for some sufferers from hot flushes. A number of studies in the 1950s validated the effectiveness of vitamin E for menopausal symptoms. (Dose 10-100 mg/day)
